Background

Participants taking the Pre-Test

Since 2005, the Denver Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s Educational Development Committee has hosted a free ACT Prep Workshop for high school students.

The ACT exam is required for admission to most universities and colleges throughout the country. High school students meet at a convenient location to learn techniques in ACT preparation from a certified ACT Prep tutor in Math, Science, Reading, and English portions of the ACT exam. On the first and final weekends, students participate in practice ACT exams.

Workshop Content

Students will participate in a pre-test, a post-test, and receive intensive review of ACT Prep study and test taking techniques. Additionally, students will be provided with tips on how to succeed in a college environment. On the date of the post-test, parents may participate in a informational session about preparing students for college while students are taking the post test.

Workshop Goals

The goal of the workshop is to enable students to increase their college admission test scores, as well as:

  • Gain admission to the college of their choice
  • Compete for scholarships
  • Learn successful study practices

Students are STRONGLY encouraged to attend each workshop session on time. Those students arriving on-time will be able to participate in drawings for gift cards and other prizes. Students attending every session on time, may participate in drawings for FREE iPads!

Parent Involvement

A workshop for parents and guardians will convene on the last day of the workshop while the students are taking an ACT practice exam. This will cover the following topics:

  • College admission process
  • Scholarships and financial aid
  • First year college expectations

Student Testimony

I attended the free ACT Workshops given by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for two years. My composite on my first practice test was 17. I am now a senior and my composite is 27. I am grateful that the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority cared enough to invest in my future.” Arista Ware, 2006 and 2007 participant.
